Overview
Our students receive training in cutting edge technologies in every discipline of chemistry. The department is home to the Central Alabama High Field NMR Facility, Center for Chemical Synthesis and Analysis, Mass Spectrometry Laboratory, X-Ray Crystallography Laboratory, Biophysical Spectroscopy Laboratory, and Bioenergetics Laboratory.
Moreover, researchers within the department have access to many additional UAB-wide basic chemical science resources, including advanced mass spectrometry, proteomics, genomics, and high-resolution imaging facilities, the Center for Biophysical Sciences and Engineering, and the Center for Nanoscale Materials and Integration to name only a few.
Post-Docs and Careers
On the way towards completion of their Chemistry degrees, doctoral candidates at The University of Alabama at Birmingham are equipped with the skill set needed to enter into a variety of careers.
Other graduates have secured positions at the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences, BioCryst, ExxonMobil, Avanti, Evonik, Abbvie and Southern Research Institute, among others.

- Admission to the Graduate Program in Chemistry at UAB requires a student to have earned a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Chemistry or a closely related field, and to have a strong undergraduate record in academic work and/or research experience.
- Statement of purpose
- Official transcripts from all higher education institutions attended by the applicant are required.
- Three letters of recommendation are required.
