About the program

The PhD in Freshwater Sciences at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee is a dissertation-based program that prepares you for a rewarding career in academia, research or industry. In fact, all of of graduates from our PhD program have gone into a water-related job after graduation.

With a strong emphasis on research, doctoral students concentrate on complex interdisciplinary issues through a well-defined focus of study. You’ll have the opportunity to work alongside some of the world’s leading freshwater scientists while advancing critical research.

A degree in biology, chemistry, economics, geosciences, mathematics, physics, public policy or other appropriate natural science, social science or engineering discipline.
An undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0 (4.0 basis).
Submission of scores on the General Test of the Graduate Record Examination.
Three letters of recommendation from persons familiar with the applicant’s scholarship, research achievements and potential.
