About the program
Special items available for student research in this Plant and Soil Sciences program at the University of Delaware include field, state-of-the-art greenhouse and growth chamber facilities, radioisotope room, scintillation counters, gas and liquid chromatographs, X-ray diffractometer, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, pressure-jump relaxation apparatus, atomic absorption spectrophotometers, inductively coupled plasma spectrometer, low- and high-speed centrifuges, microtomes, electrophoretic apparatus, cold rooms, atomic force and electron microscopes, carbon-nitrogen-sulfur analyzer, DNA sequencers, and a bioinformatics center.
Programme Structure
Within the Plant and Soil Sciences degree, two focused concentration areas exist:
- Plant science, which includes the areas of plant molecular biology, plant breeding, plant pathology, plant tissue culture, landscape design, horticulture, crop science, plant anatomy and plant physiology; and
- Soil science, which includes soil chemistry, soil fertility and management, soil physics, soil microbiology and biochemistry, environmental microbiology, soil and water quality, and soil formation and biogeochemistry.

General requirements
- Applicants for the Ph.D. degree must have received at least one undergraduate degree with or without a subsequent master’s degree. An M.S. degree is strongly preferred but not required. Students without a master’s degree are encouraged to apply to the M.S. degree program.
- Statement of research interest(s); must include the name of the PLSC faculty member(s) who has provided the candidate with an informal commitment to serve as academic advisor (all applicants) and financial support (all students seeking financial assistance)
- Resume
- Official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate studies (minimum 2.5/4.0 cumulative and 3.0/4.0 within major; recommended minimum 3.0/4.0 cumulative and 3.5/4.0 within major).
- Three letters of recommendation from individuals knowledgeable of the applicant’s academic preparation and potential ability as a graduate student
