About

History

Named after the second prime minister of Australia, Deakin University was formally established in 1974 with a goal of widening access to university study, particularly through the provision of distance education programs. Since then, Deakin has grown to become a global leader in digital learning technologies and one of the top 50 universities under 50 years (QS).

Education

Deakin is a leading provider of innovative learning programs, particularly those that leverage digital learning technologies. We combine this innovative teaching focus with an emphasis on maintaining a vibrant, culturally-rich learning environment, which has resulted in Deakin being ranked number one in the Australian state of Victoria for student satisfaction in both our undergraduate (2010-2017) and postgraduate (2016-2017) programs.

Research

Ranked in the top 2 per cent of the world’s universities in each of the major rankings, Deakin has a collaborative and supportive research culture that emphasises both rigour and impact. Our high-quality, innovative research facilities provide our researchers with a platform for solving global challenges and making a positive impact on the world.

Career

Deakin’s Graduate Employment Division provides our students and graduates with personalised career education, advice, and support to help them become more marketable on the international job market.

Services

Student services

At Deakin, you get support every step of the way. For job advice, our career service can help. For health or mental wellbeing services, healthcare professionals are on hand. From childcare services to disability support, we take care of your needs so you can enjoy life at Deakin.

We have International Student Advisers (ISAs) on every campus. They have lived and studied in other countries and have experienced firsthand the cultural and social adjustments required. They can provide general support to you during your studies, as well as offer advice on:

  • getting a new CoE/visa
  • visa conditions relating to enrolment requirements
  • work restrictions
  • intermission
  • leave of absence approval
  • crisis management.

Housing services

You can choose to live on or off campus, and both options have plenty of benefits.

  • On campus - Living on campus is a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the Deakin experience. Plus, students who live on campus are better connected and more likely to achieve higher grades than their peers.
  • Off campus - There are plenty of options if you'd like to live off campus. Deakin’s HouseMe website provides a database of local houses available to rent, near to each campus.
  • Short stays - Our on-campus accommodation isn’t just for students. We welcome academics, school groups, families and individuals to stay with us throughout the year in Burwood and Warrnambool, and for the summer months in Geelong.

Library services

The Library is central to student learning. As a hub for accessing information and technology – the space needs to be responsive to those demands.

Our library reflects the varied needs of our students, with options to collaborate with peers in group study rooms, or access quiet zones and solo study pods.

ICT services

Our wireless network is called eduroam.

Medical services

Students and staff at each of our campuses have easy access to an accredited medical centre, with both male and female doctors offering respectful and professional care.

Our medical centres offer all the services you'd expect from a doctor's surgery, and it couldn't be easier to get the help you need.

Student Life

Campus life

  • Bordered by picturesque parkland, the accommodation at our Melbourne Burwood Campus is home to 1175 students. With a great mix of state-of-the-art contemporary student housing and traditional village living, students in Burwood enjoy a unique Melbourne lifestyle.
  • Around 800 students call the spacious Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus home. Just a short drive from the incredible surf coast and Great Ocean Road, the campus boasts incredible recreational facilities and lots of green space.
  • Experience the peace and quiet of regional Victoria while living on campus at Warrnambool. Living on the banks of the pristine Hopkins River means that leisurely morning walks or a fish before class is the norm.

Sports facilities

Sport has always been at the heart of Deakin, and is one of our greatest strengths. We have a variety of facilities across our campuses, including gyms, fitness classes, basketball courts and sports ovals with pavilions. We have also recently launched a new, state-of-the-art Elite Sports Precinct at the Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus.

Sporting clubs and societies are a great way to get involved, get fit and make friends. We have clubs and societies dedicated to different sports, and new ones are starting up all the time. You could even start your own.

Student clubs

Uni isn't all about books and study. We've got loads of sports, cultural, academic, religious and social clubs and societies at each of our campuses. There’s also a range of sport and recreational groups. Make the most of your time at Deakin: meet new people, try new things, share your skills and discover your hidden talents.

As a Deakin student you can explore more than 120 clubs and societies across our campuses. They range from sports, health and personal development clubs to academic, course and discipline-specific groups, plus religious societies and many more. There's sure to be a club or society to suit your interests.
