About

Our PhD students join us from all over the world, with current candidates researching areas such as:

  • entrepreneurial disengagement
  • co-creation in social entrepreneurship
  • cognitive entrepreneurship and over-optimism

You study at Essex Business School (EBS) at our Southend Campus, home to world-leading academics. Our Management Science and Entrepreneurship Group organises regular research seminars so you can hear cutting-edge research and network with scholars within the School and from other universities.

You are encouraged to develop connections with practitioners and policy makers and draw on these insights to develop new approaches to the study of entrepreneurship and innovation. We also offer you opportunities to work alongside social enterprises, such as The Big Issue, to inform your doctoral research.

You can opt to study on a full-time or part-time basis (usually six years) and we also offer an MPhil and a Masters by dissertation in this subject.

If you don’t have a Masters, our four-year integrated PhD (or 1+3), allows you to spend your first year studying at Masters level in order to develop the necessary knowledge and skills to start your independent research in year two. This option is not available to all programmes, so please contact us for more information.
