History
Queen Mary’s proud history is built on four institutions stretching back to 1785. All four institutions, St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College, The London Hospital Medical College, Westfield College and Queen Mary College were founded to improve the lives of people with less privilege.
Education

Research
Queen Mary is a leading research-intensive University. Ranked 14th in the world and 5th in the UK (THE World University Ranking 2024), and joint 7th for the quality of research in the latest 2021 REF.
Research carried out by Queen Mary's Professors Jonathan Grigg and Chris Griffiths highlighted the effects of air pollution on children and was instrumental in the introduction of the London Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ).
The University's BioEnterprises Innovation Centre in Whitechapel supports drug discovery start-ups and has created over 500 jobs in science.
Queen Mary has partnerships with major industrial firms such as Pfizer, IBM, and Huawei.

Queen Mary's Student Enquiry Centre (SEC) is the front face of Academic Registry and supports (non-Medical and Dental) undergraduate and postgraduate taught students.
The SEC supports students with enrolment; obtaining official documents; council tax exemption; discounted travel; bursaries, grants, and scholarships; changing programme, interrupting or withdrawing from your studies; exams and more.
Housing services
Queen Mary is the only campus-based Russell Group university in London and offers accommodation to students at their central London campuses in Mile End and across zone one, as well as dedicated accommodation for postgraduate students at Aspire Point in Stratford. The University guarantees first year accommodation to all new undergraduate and foundation students, who meet the eligibility criteria.

Facilities include group study areas, bookable rooms, quiet reading spaces, IT suites, laptop loans, extensive e-resources, and access to University of London Senate House. Archives and special collections provide a unique insight into the history of Queen Mary and are used in teaching and research.

Medical services
Student health and wellbeing is a priority for Queen Mary. Students who live on or near campus can register with the free on campus student health service. Students can also access free and confidential advice and counselling services ensuring they have the personal support network required to study in comfort and confidence.
Campus life
Queen Mary has five campuses across central and east London. Mile End is the University’s primary campus, nestled along Regent’s Canal, the vibrant campus offers shops, cafés, a gym, and green spaces. Accommodation for over 2,500 students is available at Mile End, with excellent transport links across London.
Medicine and dentistry students have campuses at Whitechapel and West Smithfield, each with unique facilities. Postgraduate law is taught at Holborn, near the Royal Courts of Justice. Charterhouse Square campus, in the heart of London, hosts the Barts Cancer Institute, the William Harvey Research Institute, and the Wolfson Institute of Population Health. Nearby are the Barbican Arts Centre, the Museum of London, and other famous landmarks.
Sports facilities
Qmotion is the Students' Union's Sport and Fitness Centre, located at the Mile End campus. It offers three floors of amazing facilities including a fully equipped gym, female-only gym, studio spaces, squash court and sports hall.
There's a fun, welcoming and inclusive environment where you can exercise, make friends and de-stress. All members can also access a free personalised training programme every 6 weeks from fully qualified fitness instructors. Plus, there's also over 20 daily group exercise classes a week including yoga, circuits, HIIT and zumba.
Student clubs
Queen Mary Students’ Union has over 300 societies and sports clubs. There's something for everyone – from anime and archery to yoga and zoology.
Join a trip, play sport, celebrate at cultural events or make a difference with volunteering and sustainability projects.
There are also hundreds of events on and off campus, including film nights, live comedy and music, club nights and formals.Accreditation
- Queen Mary is a member of the Russell Group, which represents 24 leading UK universities committed to maintaining the highest standards in research and teaching.
- Students can study Business programmes accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). Marketing programmes provide access to the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) Graduate Gateway.
- Psychology programmes are accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS).
- The School of Economics and Finance is affiliated with the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Institute, with many masters programmes offering a CFA pathway.
- Queen Mary established the first Aeronautical Engineering and Materials departments in the UK. Programmes within the School of Engineering are accredited by the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAES) Institution of Engineering and Technology, and Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
